The artist who invents and designs them is Kristi Jensen Pierro. She is working with a skilled, talented and imaginative group of artisans together with who the figurines become alive. She is drawing these babies since 1986 and tells that once they came up with the brilliant ideas, drawing is the easier part. Each figurine and baby has a story behind on which that character is based. The designs of snow babies are usually divided by themes; for example everydays, gift giving, special celebrations, pastimes and so on. This is how the product lines are planed and started to make. This is the time when the group decides how many snow babies is that certain product line going to include. It is usually the licensed figurines that the group loves to work on because they usually have stories behind. These licensed figurines are the ones who are interacting with the snow babies, and together they create a really nice collectible. Kristi was first of all inspired by her children when designing the snow babies and by her friends’ children. Actually people are really helpful when it comes to ideas, they are sending pictures or bringing them to events organized by Department 56 to show them to Kristi. Once these are discussed, the group starts to work on the babies. They draw sketches that are later brought to the Product Marketing and Production team to discuss it. Here is where they decide whether based on the sketch the porcelain baby can be or not made. If it is not possible, then with some adjustments they try to change the idea, but if the baby is able to make, then work starts. They draw from all sides the figure and then show it to the sculptors with all the minimal details. The sculptors have one of the hardest works, since they need to translate into the snow baby the feeling that the artists are trying to create in people. The snow babies are made of porcelain bisques and are hand painted after. With all the detailed and finest work these Snowbabies have become a product of great demand and there are many people who have whole collections of them. The company had a huge success with their introduction into the product lines and now they become one of the main products.
